Utah House Democrats Oppose Bill Ending Partnership with E.R.I.C.
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah House Democratic Caucus released the following statement on H.B. 332 Voter Registration Data Amendments:
“We strongly oppose H.B. 332 Voter Registration Data Amendments, a bill that severs Utah’s partnership with the Electronic Registration Information Center (E.R.I.C)—a trusted, nonpartisan network used by 24 states and Washington, D.C. to ensure accurate voter records. E.R.I.C helps Utah identify and correct voter registration inconsistencies, providing county clerks with critical data on approximately 60,000 voter records each year. Eliminating this system would strip clerks of an irreplaceable tool, jeopardizing the integrity of our voter rolls.
As written, H.B. 332 would require Utah to partner with a third-party vendor that would gain access to Utah’s entire voter database. This private vendor would not fall under the same rigorous transparency requirements as E.R.I.C. and could compel the state tax commission to share sensitive information, including driver records, Medicaid applications, immigration status and property ownership data.
A recent audit confirmed that Utah’s current system effectively prevents significant voter fraud. We remain committed to protecting the integrity of our elections and strongly oppose any legislation that undermines the secure and proven systems that have served Utah voters for years. Utahns deserve to have their private data protected by the state, not placed in the hands of a third-party vendor who has unregulated access to Utahns secure information.”
